Crafting Rules

Base Creation Time(Days): item's market price (in gp) * 10 / item's crafting DC2

Step 1: Pay the material cost of the item. This cost is equal to 1/3 the item's base price.

Step 2: Make a crafting check against the item's DC.

Success

The item was created in the item's base creation time.

  • If you rolled 1½ x DC, the crafting time is reduced by one third (x2/3).
  • If you rolled 2 x DC, the crafting time is reduced to half (x1/2).
  • If you rolled 3 x DC, the crafting time is reduced to one third (x1/3).
  • If you rolled 4 x DC, the crafting time is reduced to one quarter (x1/4).
  • And so on.

Failure

At the end of the base creation time the item is still not finished.

You may spend a week* to make another crafting check to finish the item (with no reduction in time for high rolls). If you failed by 5 or more, you need to spend 1/6 of the item's price in order to make this new check.
*If the crafting time is measured in days, you spend an additional day for each new check. If the crafting time is measured in hours, you spend an additional hour for each new check.

If you still fail, you may keep doing this as many times as is needed to get a successful check, though each time you fail by 5 or more, you need to spend 1/6 the item's price to continue.

Examples

1st Example: Eldrin constructs a Composite Longbow. It costs 100 gp, and the DC is 15. This means the base crafting time is (100 * 10) / (15 * 15) = 4.44 weeks, which is rounded up to 5 weeks.

Eldrin rolls a 17. He finished the longbow in 5 weeks at the cost of 34 gp.

2nd Example: Grodin crafts a fullplate. Fullplates cost 1500 gp and have a crafting DC of 19. The base crafting time is (1500 * 10) / (19 * 19) ≈ 42 weeks.

Grodin is a master craftsman, so roll 37. This is more than (1½ * 19 ≈ 29), so he finished the fullplate in one third less time, 28 weeks, at the cost of 500 gp.

3rd Example: Bruno crafts a bastard sword. Basted swords cost 35 gp and have a crafting DC of 18, so the base crafting time is (35 * 10) / (18 * 18) ≈ 2 weeks.

Bruno rolls 14, failing to hit the DC. Two week has passed, but the sword isn't done.

He rolls again, and gets 11, failing by more than 5.

He pays 2.5 gp for new materials and rolls again, this time getting 25 and finishing the sword. Even though his last roll was more than 1.5 times the DC, he does not get a reduction in time. So the sword took 4 weeks and 17.5 gp to make.

4th Example Clovin is making sunrods. They cost 2 gp and have a crafting DC of 25. Thus the crafting time is (2 * 10) / (25 * 25) ≈ 2 hours.

Clovin rolls 22, failing his check, meaning 2 hours has passed without finishing the sunrod.

He rolls again, getting 27 this time, finishing the sunrod. He spent 3 hours and 1 gp.
