Shadari is the goddess of harvest and healing in the Imperial Pantheon. Compassion and peace are her greatest virtues, but her followers should also be ready to protect their flock against those that would do them harm.
Domains
Agriculture, community and healing are the three main pillars of Shadari’s powers. She also has some of the powers of the sun, bringing light to the dark places and smiting that which hides in the darkness.
Teachings
- Show compassion towards all. Even your worst enemies might find redemption in kindness.
- Share your blessings with those that have less. Giving should come from the heart, and not from the pressure of others.
- Care for those that are sick or injured. Carry their burdens on your back, as you would like others to do, if you were in their place.
- Peace is a virtue. But when peace is impossible, you should not hesitate what needs to be done. Destroy those that would destroy your community, and if the source is taint, burn it out.
Symbols
Shadari’s symbol is a chalice overflowing with bounty or wine. The official weapon of her church is the scimitar, though her followers will also take up farming implements like scythes and sickles to fight their foes.
Her followers do not carry a holy symbol, but may present the gesture of The Cupped Hands.
Her color is blue. While her clergy in town and cities may wear robes of all blue, the clergy in smaller towns and villages generally wear whatever is available, no matter the color.
Organization
Worshippers
Shadari is worshipped throughout the empire, but her worship is dominant in rural communities where her shrine may be the only in the village. Almost every farmer will offer prayers to Shadari for good harvest, even those that also worship local gods and spirits on the side. In urban communities, worship is less consistent, with citizens visiting her temples when they are sick or incapable of supporting themselves (as the church often run soup kitchens and shelters when able). Depending on the community, donations to the church may be plentiful, or leave the church struggling to make ends meet.
Clergy
The church of Shadari is organized organically, with each temple and shrine responsible for its own running, though different temples will readily help each other when needed. In some larger towns and cities, temples and shrines will be grouped together, enabling them to distribute their resources where they are needed the most.
The clergy of Shadari are tasked with tending to the physical and spiritual needs of any person that might need help. The should help their local community and try to improve the circumstances of the people therein. However, priests are also expected to be trained in combat, so that they can help defend the community, if the need arises.
Temples and Shrines
Temples and shrines to Shadari is found in most settlements in the empire.
In the towns and cities, the temples serve as meeting places, soup kitchens and shelters for the homeless and sick. They are made in the local styles, and generally indistinguishable from a large guild hall. Priests may live in the temple, or in their own dwellings depending on the local culture.
In the smaller villages and hamlets, the shrines follow more or less the same style, though they can usually dispense with the auxiliary structures used to help the poor in larger settlements.
Holy days and Festivals
In rural communities, it is common for the locals to meet in the shrine every 10 days or so to listen to the priests and speak about local affairs. In addition they will hold harvest and planting festivals to Shadari (and local farming deities and spirits) at the end of Harvest and before Planting. There is usually also midwinter day of prayer around the end of the month of Prayer.
Universally, Shadari is one of the patron deities of The Festival, during which the church of Shadari provides food and entertainment (if the budget allows it). It is custom during the festival for well-to-do citizens and local leaders to donate generously to the church.
In addition, there are smaller holy days that may or may not be celebrated depending on the locale:
- New Birth (6th of Judgement): Where the children that have been born during the previous year are introduced to Shadari and the community.
- Salve of Shadari (24th to 26th of Books): During which are relegated the story of the believer Naae, one of Shadari’s first followers.
- The Walk of Penance (13th to 18th of Mercy): During which newly released criminals can stand before the congregation and state their penitence, so as to be forgiven by the community.
